a fragile world

The other day, in a lecture on modernist poetry, the lecturer was talking about the sentiments prior to the first world war. Back then it was generally thought that europe was advanced enough to be free of war. Europeans actually thought that they were enlightened enough so that they would never engage each other in war again. Then, of course, the first world war happened and shattered everyone's idealism, world war two finished it off in an even different way.. but anyway, we were discussing the effects of these changes on poetic style and stuff... but then my mind started to wander away from what the lecturer was saying and I realized "we are in the same mentality today!" Granted it is a bit different, but we are stuck in this sense of human triumph and idealism. 9-11 did a bit to slap the world awake, but we are still blind to our own lack of control and chaos. Sure, we have realized that no one is immune to the attacks of terror, but we have made a critical world view...

Lost, Luxury, and Women in the Workplace

I am sitting in my room. Its late. Its dark outside, and odds are it is wet there too. I cant be sure about the moisture since I cant be bothered to open my curtains. I must admit that today was a pretty well wasted day. I spent quite a few hours watching many episodes from the first season of Lost that I rented on a whim. I am addicted and cannot wait to get the rest of the season, but I will wait until after my tutorials on Thursday. If I get them sooner then the rest of my week will be wasted. In truth, it wasn't my plan to spend the day like that. This morning I got up to do some errands. The light outside was doing that weird thing that it does here when a low fog fills the air but the sun still shines brightly above it. The sun is diffused through the fog and shines into places usually filled with shadows and makes the streets look like a movie set, unnaturally lit with an omnidirectional light source. I left the house to go to Tesco's (the main supermarket around here) ...

Just one thing...

I just want to say that Shakespeare kicks so much butt.

Things I love about england

*OK, ok... after a post that was gripped by senioritis despair coupled with a healthy dash of mk angst I have regained my senses a bit and have calmed back down to a more rational state of befuddlement as I examine my many options. But options are a good thing. I just have to remember that and realize that I may have gotten a bit carried away in my assesment of my current state of affairs.* Things I Love About England >A list -The way two veiled muslim women will walk by chatting in an aristocratic, RP accented, perfect, standard, queens english. -The way the porter at the Bodleian will call me "sir" (Me: awful weather outside today isnt it? Porter: Indeed it is, Sir) -Cornish Pasties (portable meat pies... much like empanadas only hot and filled with many more goodies. -Cask Ales. They dont have cheap spigots or pressurized kegs. They have to be hand pumped out of a cask. -The fact that people like Queen and Bowie here. -The way religion is not a hot topic or political b...

The next step...

This past week I have realized an important fact: I am graduating in June. It is one of those things that I have known but never fully processed until recently. I will be done with college (finally) and will be the proud owner of a fairly useless English degree. So what to do next... that is the real question. One side of me wants nothing more than to return to Spain, for I think that I could easily settle down back into the mode of living there quite easily. Unfortunately, there is nothing for me to do there at this point. I could get my TESL or CELTA certification and teach English to Spaniards, but I do not really want to do that for the rest of my life (neither could I live off that). There are a couple international high schools in Madrid, but they are quite elite and hard to get a job in. Most require at least a masters and a couple of years of prior experience. Fortunately I would like to get a masters anyway, so I will do that. I am taking a year off though because I am not rea...

Photos of Ireland

Image
I have neglected my blogs over Christmas I admit it. I will appease the blog gods by sacrificing these newly developed Ireland pictures: This was off the coast of Kerry. A beautiful sight, where the sunlight would break through the fast moving, low clouds and create brilliant pools of light on the water. Those very clouds were ravenous as they came off the sea and they ate every mountaintop that happened to be in their way. This was Killarney at Christmas time, like the song. Guinness factory. Pretty. I thought so at least. Yours truly with Killarney National Park behind me. Stained glass. Not much more to say about it. A gnarly gnarled tree.
