Martha, my dear.

Our baby girl has finally arrived and her name has come with her. When we began the long process of looking for the perfect name, we had a couple of things we wanted:

  • Bilingual: Her name had work in English and in Spanish. 
  • Personal:  We wanted a name that was personally meaningful, one that reminded us of people we love. 

Finally, we decided on Martha/Marta.

  • Martha, the English version, is my maternal grandmother's name. I hope that my baby girl grows up to be as steadfast and as loving as her namesake. My grandma is humble and not self-seeking. She is a strong and resilient woman in a way that makes you say "they don't make em like that anymore." But I can only hope that we have made at least one more. 


  • Marta, the Spanish version, is the name of one of our best friends from Spain. Few people are as loyal as Marta, she would move heaven and hell to help a someone she loves. From her we hope our baby gets her big heart and desire to right the wrongs in the world. Her sense of style wouldn't hurt either. 
All in all, both versions of the name remind us of strong, intelligent women with strong values and big hearts and we would be honored if our little girl can grow up to be as wonderful as they are. 


It is worth noting that her middle name, Victoria, also fits both our parameters. It works in English and in Spanish and is the name of Jessica's maternal great-grandmother. Our little girl is the 6th in a long line firstborn girls;Victoria was number 2.

Todavía me acuerdo muy bien del día que conocí a tu abuela, yo también quiero ser como ella. Ahora me queda conocer en persona a la preciosa Martita :)

Snowmelt demands movement

The sun is out again today. The snow has all but melted except for in the abandoned lots where they piled it up several stories high; but even those piles are melting, leaving behind all of the grime that was plowed up with the snow and rivulets of water running towards the nearest gutter. The fact that the water reaches the drain is quite a feat. Just weeks ago it would have frozen halfway across the sidewalk... and lain in waiting for an unsuspecting jogger. Blogs

I remember when I started blogging. I think I was one of the first people I know to start blogging. Dont get me wrong, it was a cultural phenomenon back 4 years ago when I began, but none of my friends really did it. And then all of a sudden a bunch of us did. We all kept it up for a while, some came and went, but I had a pretty vibrant blogging community. Tonight I found myself checking my friends blogs and finding only abandoned websites for the most part. It kind of kills a lot of the fun of blogging for me.
