good and done

I'm done with college. That is crazy. Until this week, I had been studying continuously since I was 5. That is 18 years of a single activity, 18 years of singlemindedness, 18 years of focusing on filling my brain with information and filling my report card with something that will save me from the proverbial slap on the wrist. And now I am finished with all of that. I have my degree in English Literature, my concentration in creative writing, and my minor in communications. What does this all add up to? Well, for now it adds up to me sitting at my desk in my boxers, basking in the morning summer sun and itching slightly from a sunburn I received yesterday at the swimming pool. Creedence Clearwater Revival is playing from my high school boombox and it seems fairly appropriate for its summery, upbeat, antiestablisment sounds. Plus it has a sort of hillbilly twang to it which seems to fit the scene of sitting in the sun in your underpants.

So I am theoretically supposed to have my life together now. Wisdom is supposed to flow from me like the waters of the Nile, unfortunately I think it just trickles from me like a leaky faucet. So since I am not really sure what life is supposed to look like for me in the future, I do whatever any trickle-wise person would do... I stall. This next year in Madrid is sort of a time of getting my bearings. And what better place to do that then the country where I grew up. Next year, next year... I don't even really know what I am doing when "next year" rolls around. For now I am just enjoying the summer. My friend Dave Macadam, who is staying with me for a bit, reminded me yesterday that this may be my last real summer, since because real employers rarely give you the sweet 3 month vacation that students are so well accustomed to. So, until I start my summer job in a couple weeks, I am going to do my best to simply enjoy my well deserved break.

Congratulations Trickle-Wisdom Man! Most people are still trying to get their stuff together way into their 40s, so don't feel like you have to have it all sorted out. You must enjoy this "summer" vacation, because David is right, it will probably be your last until you retire. Enjoy!

Ryan, I was checking your blog to see how you feel about the World Cup. Please humor me.

p.s. Michelle wants to know if you'll be supporting England now that Spain is out.
