A trip to durham
On wednesday I left sweet Oxford and went up north to visit Kenny in Durham. It is an old small college town, whose landscape is dominated by the presence of the University and the Cathedral. We hung out for several days, taking it easy mostly: going out to eat, running errands, watching movies, talking, visiting the sights, and chilling with Kenny's friends (everyone from his ethiopian housemate, to his working class british friends from his job, and the people from his cell group). As always, it was good to see him and catch up. I think I will tell of my time there with pictures and captions:
Here's the cathedral that Bill Bryson says is his favorite. Notice that that design and architecture would never be seen in Spain or such places. The anglo-saxon/norman influences are pretty obvious and cool looking, especially the squarishness of the central tower.

Here is Kenny. Notice how well his clothes match the mossy stone and cross. He is clearly fashion savvy. The english interpret the way he seems to match the monument as a sign of his christian devotion. Brace yourselves for his cannonization sometime soon.

Kenny took this one. It looks like pseudo artsy CD cover art or something. Is the picture trying to say that I am turning my back on the cross, or that the cross is all that stands between me and the brewing storm? Considering that I went to 4 religious services whilst in Durham (Kenny's cell group, Evensong, Matin, and the main Sunday morning service) 3 on my own and enjoyed all 4... I would say that the latter interpretation makes more sense.

That is the old castle that shares the hill with the cathedral. It belonged to the patron of the university who left its structure to the institution. Notice the river below. I saw several crew teams rowing up and down it with varying degrees of success.

Saint Patrick wore hats just like those.

Sunday morning kenny's leaving to the airport to go back to Spain was a bit of a fiasco as he forgot his passport after rushing out the door when his alarm clock did not go off. He missed his flight and came back home with a new flight for the following day. In this picture Kenny is thinking " my leaving to the airport to go back to Spain was a bit of a fiasco"

My spirit of loyalty and solidarity came through when I also missed my transportation back to Oxford. Apparently I don't know how to read a train ticket. In this picture I am thinking "my spirit of loyalty and solidarity is really kicking in right now"

As with plane trips, booking in advance is cheap for trains. Having to buy a replacement ticket is not.
